FK-5-1-12 Clean Agent Fire Extinguishing System

What is Novec™ 1230 (FK-5-1-12)?

Novec™ 1230 fire protection fluid, scientifically known as FK-5-1-12 (dodecafluoro-2-methylpentan-3-one, chemical formula C₆F₁₂O), is a clean fire suppression agent developed for total flooding fire protection systems. It is composed of carbon, fluorine, and oxygen.

Novec™ 1230 (FK-5-1-12) is a colourless, odourless liquid stored under pressure. When discharged, it is released as a liquid that rapidly vaporises, absorbing heat and interrupting the fire’s combustion process. The agent is electrically non-conductive, does not obscure vision, and leaves no residue, making it ideal for the protection of sensitive equipment and critical environments.

Novec™ 1230 (FK-5-1-12) does not displace oxygen, allowing it to be safely used in normally occupied spaces when applied at standard design concentrations. It has a wide margin of safety for human exposure and is suitable for areas where people may be present during discharge.

When used as designed, Novec™ 1230 (FK-5-1-12) causes no chemical damage to equipment, materials, or furnishings within the protected area. It provides effective fire suppression without cleanup requirements and without harm to occupants or assets during fire extinguishing operations.

Extinguishing Method – Novec™ 1230 (FK-5-1-12)

Novec™ 1230 (FK-5-1-12) suppresses fires primarily through rapid heat absorption as it transitions from a liquid to a gas. This cooling effect quickly lowers the fire’s temperature below the level needed to sustain combustion.

In addition to its cooling action, Novec™ 1230 (FK-5-1-12) interrupts the chemical reactions that fuel flames, providing fast and highly effective fire suppression.

Unlike some extinguishing agents, Novec™ 1230 (FK-5-1-12) does not extinguish fires by displacing oxygen, making it safe for use in areas where people are present when applied at approved design concentrations.

Why Novec™ 1230 (FK-5-1-12)?

Novec™ 1230 (FK-5-1-12) offers a high-performance fire suppression solution for environments where speed, safety, and protecting critical assets are paramount. Its rapid activation controls fires quickly, reducing the risk of damage and keeping operations running smoothly.

Designed for efficiency, the system takes up minimal space, maintains clear visibility during discharge, and leaves no harmful residue behind. This makes it an excellent choice for safeguarding sensitive equipment and occupied areas without disruption.

Typical Areas of Fire Protection

Clean agent Novec™ 1230 (FK-5-1-12) Fire Extinguishing Systems is suitable for a variety of fire hazard areas including spaces with class A, B, and C fire hazards.

Typical areas that can be protected by an FK-5-1-12 system are detailed below; the list is by no means exhaustive:

Novec™ 1230 Suppression Systems

Novec™ 1230 (FK-5-1-12) clean agent fire suppression systems provide highly effective protection for critical environments, combining rapid response with safety and reliability. By quickly absorbing heat and disrupting the chemical reactions that fuel fires, these systems control flames efficiently and minimize damage.

Designed for sensitive and high-value equipment, Novec™ 1230 (FK-5-1-12) leaves no residue, preserves visibility during discharge, and allows for fast recovery after activation. Its clean, safe, and compact design makes it an ideal choice for occupied spaces where continuity, asset protection, and operational uptime are priorities.

Features and Benefits

Structure and Function

Advanced TFP Novec™ 1230 (FK-5-1-12) fire suppression systems can be engineered as single-zone systems to protect an individual hazard area, or as multi-zone systems capable of safeguarding multiple protected spaces from a common agent supply.

In addition to conventional clean agent system operating pressures of 25 bar and 42 bar, Advanced TFP offers Novec™ 1230 (FK-5-1-12) systems designed for 50 bar operating pressure, providing enhanced system performance and design flexibility. This higher-pressure configuration allows systems to be customised and optimised to suit the specific layout and risk profile of each protected area.

Fire protection standards for clean agent systems require the protected enclosure to be fully flooded within 10 seconds. The use of 50 bar technology enables longer and more complex pipe networks compared to lower-pressure systems, allowing greater freedom in system design. As a result, Novec™ 1230 (FK-5-1-12) agent cylinders can be located remotely, outside the protected space, without compromising discharge performance.

Typical Single Zone Manifold System

The extinguishing agent is stored in liquid form in special cylinders, where a nitrogen cushion is superimposed over the extinguishing agent and thus generates the operating pressure of 25 or 42 or 50 bar. Typical manifold system for single area protection. For single area system, the solenoid actuator will act to open the master cylinder after getting the instruction from control panel, and then the gas from the master cylinder will open the slave cylinders.
